Clifton to host top tournament

PLAYERS will travel from all around Queensland to take part in the two-day Sapphire Shield polo tournament at Clifton this weekend.

The event was organised by the Downs Polo Association and the games will be battled out at the Clifton Showgrounds.

The Sapphire Shield has been a traditional polo tournament every July for the last 100 years.

Downs Polo Club president Terry O'Leary said the sport had become more popular in the past few years.

"The popularity of polo has increased in recent years so we hope that highlighting this event in Clifton will help to raise its profile even more," he said.

"Polo is a great spectator sport as it's fast-paced and exciting to watch, so polo in Clifton will give local people the chance to come along and enjoy one of the world's oldest team sports.

"It will be a great day out for the whole family."

Spectator entry is free for the two-day event.
