Climate forum angers councillor

A ROADSHOW of climate change scientists from Canberra left one Southern Downs Regional councillor angry last week after he stormed out of a forum before he “drowned in bull**** and misinformation”.

Cr Ross Bartley raised the encounter in general business of this week's community services committee meeting, asking why key stakeholders weren't invited to attend.

He said the issue of food security was huge for this region and it was a missed opportunity for some key industry contacts to give information to the government visitors.

“Our first points of contact should have been our Economic Development Unit,” he said.

“They have a database of key stakeholders and valuable information that could have been useful.

“Some of the best contacts are very busy people but they will respond to approaches by the economic development officers and I hope this relationship hasn't been jeopardised.”

Cr Bartley said some of the top croppers worked in this region, growing regardless of “rain, hail or drought”.

Cr Mally McMurtrie said she asked the scientists whether they were going to put in place processes for Australia to grow and provide its own food completely.

“I don't know I got a proper answer to this question,” she said.

“It's okay to say we don't need water now, but there was a time that we did.

“We need water security, we don't have a dam.”

Mayor Ron Bellingham said the breakfast forum did improve, saying if Cr Bartley had stuck around, he might have found it more useful.

“I found it was very much the opportunity for a two way discussion, getting knowledge in what's available to assist us,” he said.
