Close battle in the Big Q major semi final

BASKETBALL: Some brilliant play by DJ Cremasco lit up the Warwick Wildcats as they beat Saints in the Heathley Big Q basketball major semi final at WIRAC on Saturday night.

Warwick trailed 27-18 after seven minutes but fought back to only trail Saints 27-25 at quarter time.

At half-time, Warwick led 55-49 but Saints fought back to only trail 67-66 with four minutes to go in the third quarter. Saints missed a shot and Josh Cremasco got the rebound for Warwick to score a two pointer and a free throw for a 70-66 lead.

DJ Cremasco and James Legan added three pointers but Saints again fought back to only trail 78-77 at three-quarter time.

There was no score in the first two minutes of the last quarter before DJ Cremasco and Legan scored three pointers, James Kuon did a slam dunk for Warwick for a 86-77 lead with seven minutes to go.

Warwick maintained the lead but Saints twice got to within three pointer of the Wildcats.

With 39 seconds to go, Ashley Williamson landed a free shot to put Warwick up 95-91. Josh converted a free throw, DJ scored a three pointer with five seconds to go and it was Warwick home 99-91.

Legan scored 32, James Kuon 30, DJ 15 and Josh 13.

Kuon put a lot of the credit for the Warwick win at the feet of DJ Cremasco.

"DJ came out in the first half and gave us a lift which got us over the hump,” Kuon said after the game.

In the other A-grade semi, USQ narrowly beat Runnin Rebels,

Warwick has secured home ground advantage for the grand final next Saturday. USQ beat Saints 88-79 in the preliminary final in Toowoomba on Sunday to secure the second spot in the grand final.

The Wildcats had a win and loss in reserve grade semis in Warwick and one team will play in the grand final.

A-grade coach Duncan McKenzie played in the Warwick team which won 45-33 against Toowoomba.

Kevin Globio scored 12, Jack Thornton 11 and McKenzie 10 for the winners.

Runnin Rebels won the other semi 77-63 against the second Warwick side so it will be Warwick versus Rebels in the grand final.
