Car collides with two semi-trailers on Cunningham Hwy

UPDATE 11.40am: A 42-year-old man is fighting for his life after a serious multi-vehicle crash on the Cunningham Hwy this morning.

The man was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital after sustaining life-threatening injuries when the car he was driving collided with two trucks at Aratula about 2.19am.

Police said preliminary information indicated the man was driving southbound along the Cunningham Hwy, when he collided with the rear of a semi-trailer travelling in the opposite direction.

The vehicle then collided with a second semi-trailer, which was travelling behind the first.

Both drivers of the semi-trailers were not injured.

Cunningham's Gap was closed to traffic from about 3.10am this morning but has since reopened.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the incident and is appealing for anyone who may have seen a blue 2003 Holden Commodore, with distinctive purple panelling, travelling along the Cunningham Highway prior to 2.10am, to contact police.

UPDATE 9.15am: The Cunningham Hwy has been reopened following a serious multi-vehicle crash this morning.

Cunningham's Gap was blocked in both directions from about 3.10am, with Warwick drivers being diverted via Toowoomba.

The highway was also closed near Aratula.

One patient was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in critical condition after sustaining chest injuries in the crash, which occurred about 2.19am.

Warwick Police Sergeant Lisa Self said the incident involved two semi-trailers and a car.

A spokesman from Queensland Ambulance Services said the gender and age of the patient were unknown.

 

 

UPDATE 7.35am: A patient was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in critical condition after a multi-vehicle crash on the Cunningham Hwy early this morning.

A spokesman from Queensland Ambulance Services said the patient sustained chest injuries, but the gender and age of the patient was known.

Two semi-trailers and a car were reportedly involved in the crash, which occurred about 2.19am.

Cunningham Hwy has been blocked in both directions since about 3.10am.

Traffic can not drive through Cunningham's Gap and drivers from Warwick are being diverted via Toowoomba.

The road is also closed in both directions near Aratula.

Police have advised the highway will remain closed for most of the morning as a result of the serious crash.

Cunningham's Gap was closed about 3.10am this morning.

Drivers from Warwick heading towards Brisbane are being diverted via Toowoomba.

The highway has also been closed in both directions near Aratula.

INITIAL 6.30am: The Cunningham Hwy is blocked in both directions due to a serious traffic crash.

Cunningham's Gap is closed to traffic and diversions are being made from Warwick via Toowoomba.

Local traffic between Warwick and Cunningham's Gap can still drive through.

The Cunningham Hwy is also closed in both directions near Aratula.

The road has been closed since about 3.10am this morning.

Sgt Self said it was unknown when the road would reopen as the heavy vehicles needed to be removed from the road before it could be opened.
