Clubs chasing cup win this weekend

RUGBY LEAGUE: Inglewood heads to Stanthorpe for today's Border Rugby League Patron's Cup final against Tenterfield at 1.30pm with plenty at stake.

There is a cup to be won as well as a minor premiership, a week off in the finals and home ground advantage for the grand final.

The leading team after the final round-robin on August 12 will win the right to host the August 26 grand final.

The second and third-placed teams will play in a finals game on August 19 in a battle for the second spot in the grand final.

If Tenterfield wins the Patron's Cup, it will move three points ahead of Inglewood and will almost be assured of hosting the grand final.

Inglewood captain-coach Brent Osborne said his team had a lot of injuries, work and family commitments, and wouldn't be at full strength for the cup final.

"I am looking for prop Jake Charles and second rower Zack Johnstone to have big games for us at Stanthorpe,” he said.

Tenterfield has won two of the three games between the two sides this season.

Inglewood pair Osborne and Brent Hearne recently played for the Queensland Outback side in an NRL curtain-raiser in Cairns.

Queensland Outback went down to Northern United with fullback Hearne scoring a try and landing a goal and Osborne playing at five-eighth in his debut for Queensland.

Both will be in the Inglewood team today. The cup will be presented by patron Neil Crisp.

Today, BRL and Warwick and District junior game venues will be collection points for donations of goods and money for RizeUp, a program to help set up victims of domestic violence with kitchen and laundry items when they move to alternative accommodation.

BRL president Norm Crisp said he was hopeful to see the return of women's leaguetag next season.

"The four clubs are keen to organise leaguetag and it will be discussed again at our monthly meeting this Saturday. All clubs have 30 players registered for men's teams but more men's teams welcome,” he said.
