Clubs join for Saturday fight tournament at WIRAC

BOXING: Peter Liesegang expects David Kern to impress with the speed of his punching in tomorrow's 2pm tournament at WIRAC.

Leisegang, the Warwick Boxing Club trainer, expects to have four boxers matched during the tournament.

"David has only had one fight and hit hard in the fight at Fortitude Valley,” he said.

"He punches hard and straight and in his first fight put an eight-second count on his opponent one minute into the round and the fight was stopped by the referee 20 seconds later.”

Liesegang said it was great to see the two clubs get together to jointly organise the tournament.

"A lot of our boys spar with boxers from Rose City Boxing Club, David Kern, Will Pratt and Brodie Fox have both been sparring with Charlie Sweedman from Rose City,” he said.

"Andrew Fox will be in a masters fight with an opponent from Ballina.

"He competed in the masters state titles this year and won his division. He has a lot of speed with his hands and moves well around the ring.

"He has probably had 200 amateur fights so is very experienced. Andrew is a teacher at Warwick High and there will be a lot of crowd support for him.”

One of the fights of the night will be between Rose City member Jacko McMahon and Jordan Richards from Adelaide.

"Jacko beat Jordan in a fight in Adelaide and Jordan was keen for a re-match,” Rose City head trainer Damien Lawler said.

Most of the fights will be over three two-minute rounds. The break between rounds will be one minute.

Boxers from 10 to 50 years will be in action on the night. Doors open at 1.30pm with first fights at 2pm.
