Junior rugby league clubs keen for new year

RUGBY LEAGUE: Nick Lane is approaching his ninth season of rugby league with Collegians and can't wait for kick-off in the first game.

"I have two seasons of junior league to go and usually play in the second row," Lane said.

Last season, he played in the Collegians U14 team which went down in the grand final and is hoping to go one better this season in the U16 grade.

He has played for Warwick and District at U13 and U14 level.

"I like the extra challenge in representative footy," he said.

While Lane is not an inside back, he still lists halfback Johnathan Thurston as his favourite player.

Sam Ogden is in his first year in the U16 grade and hopes to play five-eighth.

"I enjoy coming to training and sometimes kick goals," he said.

As for his favourite player, it is Warriors half Shaun Johnson.

Collegians held its sign-on on Thursday and players who have not signed up are welcome to register on www.playnrl.com/register/

The U16 team starts training under coach Dayne Barrett at Collegians at 5.30pm tonight.

The first training run for all other teams will be on February 23 at the club grounds in Jackie Howe Drive.

Scores and competition points are not recorded for age groups up to U11.

Premiership trophies are awarded in U11, U12, U13, U14 and U16 grades.

There is a finals series of three weekends in the Warwick and District competition for all five age groups.
