Coach returns for Cowboys for second season in A grade

RUGBY LEAGUE: Craig Mullaly has been re-appointed A-grade coach for a second season.

Mullaly coached the reserve-grade side to the preliminary final in 2015 and A grade to the grand final this season.

Seventeen years ago, he was part of the Cowboys team which made the 1999 grand final in A grade.

At the club presentation night, Mullaly was honoured as one of the retired players with 250 or more games for the club. He played the third most games for the Cowboys behind current reserve-grade forward David Hallman and retired forward Ron Perquin.

Matt Grew, who also steered his team to the grand final, has been re-appointed under-18 coach.

The club is still to appoint reserve-grade and second-division coaches.

David O'Leary has been re-elected president for what he says will definitely be his last term.

O'Leary was planning to stand down but with no one coming forward by the annual general meeting, he agreed to do a second term.

"I have told the club this will be my last year as president as our three children are starting to get involved in junior sport,” O'Leary said.

"I couldn't be involved in the Cowboys without the support of my wife Laura. She is very supportive of what I am trying to do with the club.”

Danny Lyons has been re-elected senior vice-president, Grew is the new junior vice-president, Carly Gillam secretary and Liz Browne treasurer.

O'Leary said additional committee members would be elected at the next general meeting on November 8 at the clubhouse at Father Ranger Oval at 6.30pm.

"We are looking for new people to come on to the committee,” he said.

"If we are going to keep the Cowboys strong into the future, more people need to come forward rather than relying on the same people.

"We had a few new committee members this season and will welcome more. The more help we have on the committee, the less the workload on the current members.”

A decision will not be made on a starting date for training until the Toowoomba Rugby League confirms a starting day for next season.

"Some players are doing fitness work themselves at the clubhouse, including 2016 A-grade captain Dylan Galloway,” he said.

"We have a few players going overseas but expect the nucleus of the A-grade side will be together again next season.”

O'Leary's guess is the club will start getting players together for some early training in mid to late November.

Anyone interesting in the available coaching roles, being part of the committee or helping in any way can call the president on 0409 754989 or email cowboys president@hotmail.com.
