Reds coach rules Horwill to sit out second Super Rugby game

AUSTRALIAN and Queensland captain James Horwill will be running water, and not into those playing for the NSW Waratahs at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium this Saturday night.

The second-rower will have to wait another week before playing his first game in nine months after he was ruled out of the Reds second Super Rugby game of the season.

Horwill rolled his ankle at training two weeks ago and missed the season opener against the Brumbies at Canberra Stadium last Saturday, a game the Reds lost 24-6.

Reds coaching director Ewen McKenzie said Horwill, who has not played since tearing his hamstring in the 13-12 win against the Brumbies in Canberra last May, was close to full fitness, but did not want to take any risks with his return.

"He's not quite ready yet so rather than mess around there we'll just continue on," he said.

"The plan at the moment is he'll probably run the water this week so his return is not far away.

"It's the start of a long season and we don't feel it's the right time to run guys who are semi-fit."
