Controversial coal drilling starts in Goomburra
DRILLING has begun in the Goomburra Valley as part of a controversial coal exploration project in the region.
Work started on one of the three properties in the Goomburra/Berat area yesterday.
A spokesman for mining company APEC said work would be undertaken on the properties from between 6.30am-5pm.
A letter sent to neighbouring landholders outlined that the drilling was being completed to meet obligations and commitments.
"An experienced water bore driller with a Class 2 water-borers ticket is being used, following the Water Art and Regulation," it stated.
"The program has made provision for core samples from one of the sites.
"A standard water bore completion is planned, a six-inch hole with five inch slotted case. Dry holes will be cemented to surface."
The exploration project, dubbed the Maryvale Project, has been the subject of controversy amongst nearby residents since drilling was announced in late April.
The project is being managed by GeoConsult.
APEC Coal said it's aware of the sensitivities in the area in a letter to residents.
"We are making considerable effort to appease concerns and leave infrastructure that will be beneficial for landholders," the letter states.
The drilling is expected to be completed within two weeks.
