Coalition to create new centre to focus on mental illness

NEARLY $20 million will be given to mental health research under a Coalition plan to create a new "national centre for excellence in youth mental health".

The new $18 million centre would focus on mental illness among Australians aged 15 to 24, for clinical trials, new research and career support for clinicians.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott announced the funds on Friday, also promising a review of "all existing mental health programs" to ensure resources go to where they are most needed.

Mr Abbott also pledged to continue the roll-out of 100 new headspace centres around the country to help young people with mental health issues.
