Coast gun wins heat
COOLUM Beach's Julian Wilson easily progressed through the first round of the US Open of Surfing in California yesterday.
Wilson won his first heat of the ASP Prime contest, posting a two-wave total of 14.67.
The 22-year-old's healthy total easily accounted for Gabe Kling (12.73), Kai Barger (10.00) and Sunny Garcia (6.83).
The Sunshine Coast rising star has a golden opportunity to progress.
His main rival in the second round is American Dane Reynolds, who has only recently returned to competitive surfing from injury.
Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning and Taj Burrow also made it to the second round.
