Tom Cobon to rep Queensland against New Zealand
TOM Cobon has capped an outstanding two months of polocrosse with selection in the Queensland open team to play in the Cooper Cup this weekend at Morgan Park.
Cobon, the grandson of Stanthorpe residents Keith and Helen Cobon, plays for the Warwick club.
"I learnt to ride a horse on my grandparents farm near Stanthorpe, my first pony was Pebbles," he said.
Cobon was part of the winning Queensland intermediate team at the nationals in Darwin last month.
He played No.1 (shooter) at Darwin but is happy to play anywhere.
Queensland beat New South Wales 33-20 in the final with Cobon playing No.1 in his section for three chukkas in the final.
"I just want to be on the field, I first played at the age of eight and haven't missed a season," he said.
Cobon and Ben Gall are the two Warwick players in the Queensland team to play New Zealand for the Cooper Cup this weekend.
"Of course I would love the opportunity to play for Australia," he said.
"I am looking forward to pushing for selection in the Queensland team for the next nationals in Albury in 2016 ... I will still be young enough for the intermediates."
While the cup this weekend will be contested by Queensland and New Zealand, both teams will play games in a round-robin series against a Queensland intermediate development team and a NSW team.
Warwick player Braydon Beck and Cunningham pair Zac O'Leary and Aaron Sillitoe are in the development team.
The Cooper Cup will be played at the NTI Rose Bowl Carnival which starts at 6pm Friday.
There is night play on Friday and Saturday and the final of the Cooper Cup will be at 2pm Sunday.
