Collegians head west for main curtain raiser to cup league
RUGBY LEAGUE: The Collegians Blue team will play Goondiwindi in the under-16 grade in the main curtain raiser to the Intrust Super Cup game in Goondiwindi tomorrow at 11.15 am.
Cup competition leaders Redcliffe will play seventh-placed Easts at 1.10pm straight after the under-16 game.
Collegians president Deb Scanlan said the boys were really looking forward to playing the curtain raiser.
"Our Collegians White team will then play Border in a game at Tenterfield at 4.30pm tomorrow,” she said.
"Collegians White beat Goondiwindi in a game last month.”
Kerry Scanlan is coach of the under-16 sides that are split into two each weekend. Four players are down for the season in each team but other players can move from team to team.
Angus Gross is manager of the under-16 from Collegians Dragons and Ben Brownlie is trainer.
Collegians under-14 White will also play Goondiwindi in the junior game at Goondiwindi on Saturday at 10.15am
Last season, Collegians and Goondiwindi each had two teams in one or two grades but this season Collegians is the only club with multiple teams, Blue and White in under-14 and under-16 grades.
A close game is likely in Goondiwindi tomorrow between the teams placed first and third.
Tomorrow will see the resumption of fixtures after the school holidays.
While the curtain raiser isn't organised for the purpose, there is always the chance an official from Redcliffe or Easts team will spot a player they believe could play in junior and colts competitions and then in the Intrust Super Cup.
North Queensland Cowboys forward Ethan Lowe is one of the latest players from the Warwick and District Junior Rugby League to make it to NRL level. He was the Cowboys goalkicker in last year's grand final after the Cowboys lost regular kicker Johnathan Thurston to injury.
Retired Super Rugby centre Gene Fairbanks is another player who went through the Goondiwindi juniors.
At present, the order of teams on the under-16 table is Collegians Blue, Collegians White, Goondiwindi, Wattles, Stanthorpe, Tenterfield and Eastern Suburbs. After the Intrust Super Cup game tomorrow, Goondiwindi will host Dalby in three TRL games.
