Videographers, online scorers needed as sport goes digital
LONG gone are the days of junior sports scorers wielding a pen and paper.
With the ever-increasing capabilities and accessibility of software and technology, junior sport of today is a highly-automated affair and as such, the need for more and more volunteers is a struggle each and every club has to face as they look forward to each new season.
The story is no different this year at Collegians Junior Rugby League Club in Warwick.
The club is calling out for volunteers ahead of the 2018 season to help with crucial tasks such as first aid officers, live online scorers and videographers.
Club president Debbie Scanlan said it was imperative the club fill the positions.
"The positions of first aid officers/sport trainers are vital," she said.
"If we don't fill those spots, the kids don't play.
"We have to supply sports trainers for every game be it home or away from under 7s to under 16s."
Mrs Scanlan said ideally the club would like to see 10 parents or volunteers trained for these positions.
"Last year it was the same ladies, doing every game every week, so we need more people to step up," she said.
"It's okay if people can't be there every week, we will appreciate any time they can give to help out.
"All new trainers will be required to attend a course, of which the date and location is yet to be confirmed, but nurses, school teachers and anyone who have done first aid courses will be able to have that prior learning recognised."
Live scoring online is part and parcel of junior and senior sport today and Mrs Scanlan said they also need a few people to help with this side of the game-day operations.
"This is a really simple job," she said.
"You get to watch your kids play and if you can use an iPad you'll be laughing.
"Having the live scoring is a great addition to the game, allowing anyone who can't make it along to still stay in touch with the progress of matches."
Also in need are videographers for home games in the 2018 season.
Game video of all matches is a junior rugby league requirement for judicial purposes, with game videos being sent weekly to the league in case of any complaint or issue.
"Again, anyone who can use a video camera and can stick around for a game or two is perfect for this job," Mrs Scanlan said.
"If anyone is willing to help out in any way, please contact me on 0438186040.
"We need these volunteers in place before our first trial match at home on Sunday 4th March.
"I look forward to hearing from you."
Collegians sign on and come and try day begins this afternoon from 4pm to 6pm.
