Colour your garden for free with seed giveaway

HUMANS - and possibly Neanderthals - have been saying it with flowers since prehistoric times.

Homo sapiens have been using them as gifts, messages of love, decorations and air fresheners for thousands of years.

>> Here's how to grab your free seeds

Floral traditions abound in myth and history.

  • In Roman mythology, white roses grew where the tears of Venus fell as she mourned Adonis.
  • The soldiers of Egyptian Pharaoh Thothmes III picked flowers in Syria as tribute 3500 years ago.
  • In Victorian England, flowers could be used to convey like or dislike, depending on how they were arranged.
  • Marigolds have been associated with meanings ranging from affection to cruelty and avarice.
