Colts eye a full season in Warwick Water Rats B grade

RUGBY UNION: Jared Fearby is in his first full season of B-grade rugby with the Warwick Water Rats men's team.

He is one of a large number of colts players lining up for Warwick this season.

The Friday night game against Rangers at Risdon Oval will not be played due to road closures but there is a chance the game will be played Saturday. There is no problem with the field.

Fearby played hooker for Scots PGC College Firsts last season and had four or five games with the Water Rats in the Darling Downs competition.

Last year was his second at the college and he has now started an apprenticeship as an electrician with Chris Malone.

"I am looking forward to the rugby season and want to play flanker,” he said.

Fearby also plays cricket with the Wheatvale club, following in the footsteps of his father, Geoff, who was a star at club and Mitchell Shield level in Warwick cricket.

Tom Winter hails from Moree and is playing school and club footy this season.

He won the Water Rats Player of the Year award last season in his first year of senior footy.

This season is his third in the Scots PGC First XV and he is usually an open side flanker but has played a lotof flyhalf for the Water Rats.

Winter won a gold medal in a relay in the Queensland 13-19 years school swimming championships last week and believes his swim training helps with his rugby.

"During the school holidays I swam 5km a session at home at Moree but don't do as much during the school year when I swim 12km a week at WIRAC,” hesaid.

As for his rugby, Winter said it would be good to make the finals again in Bgrade.

Club officials believe the change in the men's format would help Warwick.

"This season we will play genuine B-grade sides as we play the same club in each round as the Gatton A-grade side,” coach Vlad Savovski said.

"Last season most of our games were against teams with a large number of Agraders.”

Bears have forfeited to Warwick in women's this weekend.
