Colts win with goal of season

A SUPERSTRIKE by Matthew Carey and forceful play by Ethan Cussen gave the Warwick Colts a 2-1 win against South Toowoomba Hawks on Friday night.

The game began evenly with Warwick gradually gaining more possession resulting in a number of scoring attempts.

In the 39th minute, Matthew Carey struck the ball high into the right-hand corner of the net from well outside the box.

It was one of the goals of the season and a welcome sign of Carey’s recovery from an ankle injury in June.

The Hawks, who were undefeated over their past six games, came back strongly in the first 10 minutes of the second half with an equalising goal.

Ethan Cussen then followed in a ball which the Hawks keeper fumbled and forced it through to the goal giving Warwick the lead again.

The last part of the game was a good contest with both teams striving to score again, but the score remained 2-1.

Carey, Cussen, Mitch Siebenhausen and goalkeeper Jake Reid all had excellent games.

With one game to play the Warwick side is on equal points with Laidley, but behind on goal difference in third place.

Their finals place is secure.

They play second bottom team Garden City in the final round with Laidley playing top team Wanderers who have lost only one game in the season, the President’s Cup final to Warwick.
