Comeback plans canned for ‘Archie'

TRUE to his word, owner-trainer Joe Janiak has canned any possibility of equine superstar Takeover Target making a comeback.

Now 11 years old, the great sprinter cost $1375 at a tried horse sale and in a wonderful career returned more than $6 million in prizemoney.

“Archie” originally ended his racing career in 2008 during a trip to England for the Group One July Cup when he cracked a cannon bone on the upward sloping track surface.

There was a farewell party at Coffs races in January and a series of guest appearances around the nation but when he responded to his fitness workouts, possibilities beckoned.

When word first leaked the trainer was considering another campaign with the old marvel, Janiak confirmed he'd stepped up trackwork but wouldn't consider another start if there were any signs of recurring injuries.

However, scans last week showed inflammation and the horse was immediately sent into permanent retirement.

“We got up to three-quarter pace and then got X-rays taken of the leg,” Janiak revealed.

“They showed a bit of wear and tear and all along there was no chance he'd have another start without being 100 per cent.”

Looking half his age, the enigmatic champion remains stabled at Coffs racecourse and is a great favourite among the local racing fraternity in Howard Street.
