Community unites to boost bushfire appeal
THE Warwick community has shown its true spirit by uniting to assist those affected by the Victorian bushfire disaster.
Daily News editor-in-chief and general manager Peter Read was unsurprised with the generosity of the Rose City.
“Nothing brings the community together more than adversity,” Mr Read said.
“Warwick will show its true colours and this will not only help the bushfire appeal but also our community spirit.”
Warwick Credit Union pledged to donate $10,000 to the bushfire appeal.
Warwick Credit Union CEO John Brown expressed compassion to those affected by the disaster.
“It is hard to comprehend the enormity of this tragic disaster,” Mr Brown said.
“Families have not only been left homeless but in many cases have also lost loved ones.
“I realise times are tough for business at the moment but it is moments like these we can really show the Aussie spirit of helping out in times of need.”
The Warwick Chamber of Commerce has also pledged $500 and president Danny Spry hoped more people would contribute to the cause.
“We will do what we can and the fact it was deliberately lit makes the tragedy worse,” Mr Spry said.
Warwick RSL Club will hold a bushfire and flood appeal night on February 22 and donate the proceeds to the Victorian bushfires and North Queensland floods.
RSL Club manager Joann Schwenke said the disaster was gut-wrenching.
“We want to assist the community and just feel sadness and remorse to loss of lives,” Mrs Schwenke said.
“We hope the community can get behind our fundraising effort for those who are suffering such a terrible tragedy.
Warwick Black Toyota representative Jennifer Walker said their car dealership would donate a truck with personal and basic items families would need at this time.
“The response we have had from local businesses has been enormous - we have had donations from businesses including Big W, Harvey Norman, Southern Downs Dental surgery and lots more,” Mrs Walker said.
“That just goes to show everybody is able to dig a bit deeper in these economic times and are prepared to help.”
Southern Downs mayor could remember people from Victoria who “helped us greatly during our droughts”.
“This is a terrible tragedy and those communities certainly deserve the assistance,” Cr Bellingham said.
“I urge everybody to support the bushfire appeal running in our community.”
