Competition resumes at the Leyburn sprints this morning
DRIVERS are hoping for a dry track to set some fast times when competition at the Historic Leyburn Sprints resumes this morning.
The field of almost 200 cars is set to hit the track in individual time trials at 8am and run until around 3pm.
Although there was only light rain at the Darling Downs township yesterday the around-the-houses track surface remained greasy - times were slower and several cars slid off on corners, although without serious damage..
One of the casualties was track record holder Brett Hayward, who overshot the first turn in his RF92 Van Diemen-rotary and broke the front wing. Subsequently, he was beaten to the fastest time of the day by Neil Lewis, who recorded 51.7 seconds around the one km course in a DBF1 single-seater.
Tomorrow's highlights include the Shannons Show 'n' Shine display and the second day of the Retro Caravan Show Off, which has attracted 22 colourful vintage vans.
