Concerns drive council to explore mobile library bus options
THE mobile library bus was again raised at this month's Southern Downs Regional Council meeting with residents at Killarney and Leyburn penning a letter voicing their concerns.
Killarney-based councillor Jamie Mackenzie said various community meetings had been held in Killarney over the issue of the bus being decommissioned.
"As far as I can see the only option would be to replace the vehicle," he said.
"Could we refurbish the bus?
"I remember Warwick Shire Council had a second-hand vehicle. Could we source another one?"
Cr Mackenzie said the issue was causing angst in the community and more than 377 names were on a petition to keep the library service visiting the town.
A letter to council by Rod and Christel Hetherington from Leyburn stated:
"It has come to our attention there is a possible move to afoot to curtail or even to cease the operation of the mobile library truck which comes to town every Wednesday for the obvious purpose of enabling we residents to borrow books, magazines, video and music discs for us to enjoy," they wrote.
"As we and many other people in town use this service regularly we are informing you now of our disagreement. "There are several residents in our community and I am sure in other towns as well, who have difficulty being able to travel to larger centres and for them this service is invaluable."
Mayor Peter Blundell said council would continue to investigate options.
