Condamine Cup grand final goes down to last over

CRICKET: A Mitch Watson six over long on off the fourth last ball of the match secured an A-grade premiership victory for the Warwick Hotel Colts team this afternoon at Slade Park.

Batting first, Maryvale made 207 in 46 overs with captain Andrew Ryan coming in at No.6 and finishing with 77 not out.

He added a crucial 61 for the seventh wicket with Paul Bourke who was second top score with 36.

Cameron Peterson took the new ball for Colts and finished with 3-45 off 10 overs while captain and leg spinner Shaun O'Leary took 3-36 off seven overs.

In the run chase, Colts had wickets in hand but the required run rate reached eight an over off the last 10.

While Kev Poole was playing the sheet anchor role, Peterson came in and reached 10 without hitting a boundary.

Peterson then said "go” and hit four sixes and two fours to take his score to 51 before he was dismissed off the bowling of Dave Walker. He finished one over with a four, six and six off the final three balls to make the required run rate manageable.

When Peterson was out, Colts needed 20 and then 15 off the final three overs.

With five runs needed, Poole was out for 65 when he was caught by Jason Steketee on the off side off Walker late in the 49th over.

With four needed off the last over, Michael Bourke was the bowler and started with a dot ball and then ran out Fraser McVeigh with the second ball.

Mitch Watson faced the third ball of the over and hit a six over long on to secure the win and take his score to 13 not out.

Ryan was the best of the Maryvale bowlers with 3-34 off 10 overs with Walker and Michael Bourke each taking two wickets.

Peterson was named the winner of the Tom and Margaret Walsh Medal for player of the final but commented at the presentations the medal could just as easily have gone to Ryan from the losing side.

The biggest crowd of the season was on hand at Slade Park to watch the A-grade grand final.
