GRAHAM Leamon was the division 1 winner at the Southern Queensland Waterski Queensland series round at Storm King Dam, Stanthorpe, at the weekend.

Brisbane skier Sam Weeks was the best performed in the rounds but Leamon, also from Brisbane, rose to the occasion in tough conditions in the final to win the major trophy in the championships.

Waterski Queensland southern region director Paul Ryan said, with wind and rain, conditions were tough in the final.

Competition was held over two rounds and a final to cater for skiers from an area north to Bundaberg and south to St George and Grafton.

The weekend event attracted 50 skiers from areas including Bundaberg, Goondiwindi, Moree, Hervey Bay, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Toowoomba.

A round of the series was also held in February last year at Storm King Dam along with a come-and-try event late last year.

Ryan said even though Storm King was only a small dam it was a great location for the series meet.

"Most of the skiers stayed at a tourist park at the dam," Ryan said.

"They liked the spot and are keen to come back."

The next round of the series is on the Tinana Creek near Maryborough. Previous rounds this season have been at Goondiwindi, St George and Bundaberg.

The group also has a future event planned at Perseverance Dam in the Toowoomba area.

The skiers will again travel through Warwick when the state championships are on at the Goondiwindi Natural Heritage and Water Park on March 17-18.

Ryan said he expected up to 100 skiers to the championships.

"Part of the south Queensland group includes skiers from Grafton and Moree in New South Wales who are involved in the sport in Queensland because of their location.

"Goondiwindi will be a three-event competition, slalom, jump and trick. I am hoping to attract a crowd of between 500 and 1000 at the state championships.

"Many of the competitors will travel to Goondiwindi one or two days early for a bit of practise at the water park."

He said the association had been contacted by some skiers from Warwick keen to be involved in tournament skiing.

"We want to work on something in Warwick," Ryan said.

"There is a club in Warwick and they have been asking for a bit of assistance."
