Confidence returns with new home approvals up

AN INCREASE in home loan applications and approvals across the Rose City has helped lay some firm foundations for Warwick's building industry this year.

Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics earlier this week showed Queensland's housing finance commitments rose by 2.7% in November, the 10th consecutive monthly increase.

It is not just the bigger cities in the state showing the increases though.

McNally Constructions director Ian McNally said Warwick's building industry was definitely showing positive signs.

"We have seen a lot of improvement in the past few months, it is significantly better than previous years," he said.

"If there were more quality blocks to build on we would be seeing a lot more being built."

Mr McNally said it was not just new homes being built either.

"There have been a number of serious renovations including a couple of extensions," he said.

Further proving the region's building industry is in good shape is the 146 Great Start Grants, which have been paid out by the State Government, to Darling Downs residents since the start of the year.

Warwick Credit Union chief executive officer Lewis von Stieglitz said he had seen an increase in the number of home loans.

"We have not seen a rise as big as some of the bigger cities in Queensland but we have certainly seen improvement in the past couple of months," he said.

"We are planning for steady improvement over the year and expect to see an

increase in demand for loans."

Mr von Stieglitz said the increases started in July last year but the improvements became bigger in November and December.

The CEO said the rise could be attributed to the low interest rates and reasonably priced real estate in Warwick.

Master Builders deputy executive director Paul Bidwell said the rise in Queensland approvals was evidence of the housing sector finally getting back on track, with the growth here to stay.

"In fact, commitments have now increased by 35 per cent since the GFC lows in March 2011 and the industry hasn't looked so robust in a long time," he said.
