$24m upgrade for road connecting Southern Downs to tourists

TOURISTS love a good road and government reckons $24million worth of upgrades to Mr Lindesay Rd will bring more holidaymakers to our region.

Works to upgrade the Legume to Woodenbong section of road have started and Southern Downs councillor Neil Meiklejohn was there for the first ceremonial shovelling.

"The project will encourage cross-border economic opportunities from the Northern Rivers area to the Southern Downs as well as a great alternative route to the Pacific Highway for drive tourism," he said. "Once completed it will greatly improve road safety, as well as offering an alternative route and saving driving time depending on the destination."

The upgrade work is deigned to improve safety on the notoriously difficult section of Mt Lindesay Rd and was paid for by the state and federal governments.

Its taken about 20 years for the money to come through.

Lobbying for the upgrade for the Northern Growth Corridor started in the 1990s, with the formation of the Downs to Rivers Action committee which then evolved into the Legume to Woodenbong Road Alliance in February 2014.

Membership of the alliance included the councils of Tenterfield, Kyogle, Richmond Valley, Southern Downs, Scenic Rim, Lismore and Clarence Valley and many interested local freight companies and road users.
