iPhone 5 v Samsung Galaxy S4: What's the best phone?

SHOULD you buy an iPhone 5 or a Samsung Galaxy S4? Good luck finding a decent answer online without having to wade through neck-deep technical comparison.

How easy are they to use?

The iPhone has always been a clear winner in ease-of-use, though the gap has narrowed considerably.

The smaller size of the iPhone makes it easier to hold and use with one hand, while the extra screen space on the Samsung means those of us with stubby fingers can type without mashing multiple keys at once.

The screen size comes into play again with reading the screen, but the difference isn't huge.

The Samsung might have a larger screen than the iPhone, but it also displays images more sharply, so text can be the same size or smaller than on the iPhone.

The iPhone also wins when it comes to knowing how to use the phone's software.

People have been using iPhones for so long and the control Apple has over the apps means that you'll be able to dive into new apps or navigate your old ones with a lot of ease.

Obviously this comes down to whether you've used an Android phone (like the Samsung) or an iPhone before and which one you're more comfortable with. If you're new to smartphones an iPhone will be quicker to learn.

Verdict: iPhone wins

Which phone is more reliable?

Both phones are extremely reliable and have a strong pedigree of reliability behind them compared to a lot of cheaper phones.

The Samsung inches ahead as being the more reliable and long-lasting of the two, but again, the iPhone has a larger community of users who have fixed every problem the iPhone can come up with.

The iPhone is the stronger of the two when it comes to breakages. Android Authority did a drop test on the iPhone 5 and on the Galaxy S3 and found that the iPhone won.

If breakages are a concern for you, Otterbox makes cases for both phones that make them almost indestructible, so breakability is a dead-heat in practice.

Verdict: iPhone wins

Which phone is faster?

The Samsung is faster and more powerful than the iPhone in every way. If you're going to watch video, browse the net or play games, the Samsung is your best choice. The Samsung's camera is far better quality than the iPhone. The screen is also crisper and everything happens faster on the Samsung.

Both have the same amount of data storage but you can use removable SD cards (like those in your camera) with the Samsung but not with the iPhone.

Verdict: Samsung wins

What about apps?

There was once a time when the iPhone had more apps and better apps than anything else out there, but those days are gone. While the Samsung's Android apps might not be universally as well-made as the iPhone's, it's hard to find an iPhone-only app these days.

Verdict: Draw

So which one should I buy?

If you want a phone that just works and won't hassle you - get the iPhone.

If you want a fun phone that will make your friends jealous and give you an unhealthy attachment to gadgets - buy the Samsung.
