Cook Hwy reopened after serious crash: Man critical

UPDATE: Queensland Police have confirmed the Captain Cook Highway as just reopened after a crash at 12.25pm. 

EARLIER: A Kewarra Beach man is in a critical condition following a head-on collision at Kewarra Beach.

The 44-year-old man was driver of a utility which collided with a truck near the intersection of Rudder St at Clifton Beach.

Cairns Forensic Crash Unit Sgt Scott Ezard said the driver had been cut from the vehicle and was being transported to Cairns Hospital with serious injuries.

He said early indications were the southbound truck may have swerved onto the wrong side of the road prior to the crash which occured about 12.25pm.

"We'd just seek any witnesses, who we haven't spoken to already, to come forward," he said.

The driver of the truck, who is also a Kewarra Beach man, is understood to be shaken but uninjured.

There were no other passengers in either vehicle.

The Captain Cook Highway remains closed.

EARLIER: At least one person is trapped in a vehicle and the Captain Cook Highway has been closed following a serious crash at Clifton Beach.

A police spokesman said emergency services were called to the scene near the Rudder St intersection about 12.25pm following reports a truck and utility had collided.

He said fire crews were on scene assisting to free the trapped occupant.

 

The Forensic Crash Unit has also been called to the scene.

Traffic is being diverted down Rudder St and motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible.
