Bluebird Kitchen cooks up kindness for those in need

RESTAURANT owners Jim and Katie Osborn could have been left reeling following a break-in but instead they decided to reach out to those most in need.

Bluebird Kitchen hosted its $2 kitchen on Sunday afternoon, aimed at helping Rose City residents doing it tough.

Although only a couple of people came in to chow down on a home-style meal, Mrs Osborn counted the $2 kitchen a step in the right direction.

"There were a few members of the community who were brave enough to come in and we fed a couple of people so to us it was a success," she said.

"The generous support from the community has enabled us to do more events like this and do it more regularly.

"At the moment we're working out ways to make it more accessible and will be doing another one before Christmas."

Through the power of social media the Osborn's gathered huge community support after posting the event on Facebook last week.

"In just five days we raised between $700 and $800 through people buying suspended coffees or just popping a little bit extra in the pot we had on the counter," Mrs Osborn said.

"Downs Heating Cooling and Roulston Builders gave us donations that have allowed able to make us do something again in next few weeks.

"Everything is still in the works but we're hoping to make the next one Christmas themed and possibly organising transport for people who don't have cars themselves or need help getting there if that would be useful."
