Cooper and Ben win medals on day one of state athletics

ATHLETICS: Cooper Harm and Ben Carey are the Southern Downs medallists after day 1 of the Queensland 10-12 years school athletics championships in Brisbane.

Nine students from the Southern Downs are at the championships.

Cooper Harm (Allora State School) was second in 10 years high jump and Ben Carey (St Mary's) third in 10 years 800m.

In the state championships, Cooper jumped 1.36m, .03 behind the winner, the same distance he jumped to break a Southern Downs record this year.

Both have qualified to compete for Queensland in the nationals in November in Sydney.

Reagan McMillan (Allora State School) was eighth in shot put and Lucy Bourke (Scots PGC) made the final of the 100m.

Assumption College student Cooper Seng was ninth in shot put.

Allora State School pair Hamish Gartery and Jackson Pitstock, Denika Murray (Glennie Heights) and Sam Wainwright (Scots PGC) are also competing at the state championships which finish today.
