Cooper sets her eyes on polocrosse home cup

IT IS still four years away, but Warwick player Carly Cooper already has her eyes set on representing her country in her home town on the global stage.

As reported in yesterday's Daily News, Warwick will host the 2019 Polocrosse World Cup at Morgan Park.

Cooper, who has played for the Australian under-16 side, said it was her goal to represent her country in the biggest tournament.

"I'm a bit disappointed it's in Warwick, I wanted to travel the world," Cooper joked.

"I definitely want to be there, it would be a dream.

"I can't tell you how amazing it would be to play in a World Cup in my home town.

"It's great for the region to host it as well, being involved is definitely something I would like."

Cooper said she had no doubt Warwick was awarded the tournament due to the facilities.

"Morgan Park has the best facilities of any place I've been to," he said.

"The atmosphere when you're playing there is fantastic.

"It's the best ground to play at in night games because the lights there are really good.

"The work that Les Fraser and the rest of the club have put into the grounds there has certainly paid off."

But Cooper is under no illusions as to the difficulty of making the squad.

"It will be very tough, there are a lot of good girls going around at the moment," she said.

"I would say it's a particularly strong era for female polocrosse.

"The numbers just keep going up."

Aside from tough competition, Cooper - who is also a talented cricketer - said she needed to improve.

"Probably the main area I'm looking to improve is my horsemanship," Cooper said.

"You need a good horse underneath you or your chances of playing a good game are pretty low.

"That's an area I'm working hard to improve."

The journey to improvement begins next weekend in the Barastoc Interstate Polocrosse Series, where she will play in the Queensland Under-21 side.

"I think we've got a good team and I know it's going to be tough but I'm going to say that we're capable of winning," she told the Daily News last month.

"I've played with a lot of the players before."

Queensland will battle with New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia in this year's carnival.
