Crackdown on 'unnacceptable' drink-driving, drug-driving
QUEENSLAND Road Safety Week will come to a close today and will finish with a focus on drink and drug-driving.
Already this week police have seen concerning acts of drink and drug-driving in the region.
On Monday, Killarney police encountered a 34-year-old man who was allegedly driving three times over the legal limit in a school zone.
"Any sort of behaviour like that is unacceptable at any time," Warwick acting police Inspector Paul Hart said.
"From that point of view, we'd like to see road safety week every week.
"There is concerning state-wide trends, particularly in relation to drug-driving, that we all need to play close attention to.
"It's not a major issue here, no more than anywhere else.
"But technology is catching up and so is our detection capability."
Yesterday the campaign focused on sharing the road with all users, including motorcycles and pedestrians.
The taskforce launched an initiative known as Stay on track outback. "That's just about having due consideration for other road users," Insp Hart said.
"As many of us were brought up to expect, you not only have to pay attention to what you're doing on the road, but you also have to pay attention to what everyone else is doing."
Police said Queensland was a large state and there were unique risks to drivers who ventured out on to rural roads.
"There are so many more people using the roads in different ways, so there is a lot more to be aware of," Insp Hart said.
