Corinthians/Wyverns team ready for Warwick hockey finals

HOCKEY: The combined Corinthians/Wyverns ladies' team is aiming to stop Saints going back-to-back in tomorrow's grand final in Warwick hockey.

Saints will be the team to beat, following last season's premiership win, Mid-season Cup final success and then the minor premiership.

Corinthians/Wyverns scored a 2-0 win against Harlequins in the semi last weekend so will make it tough for Saints.

Warwick Hockey Association secretary Rosie Corney played for Harlequins last weekend and tips a close game.

"Danielle Cook and Lauren Eastwell are strong strikers for Corinthians/Wyverns while Sharon Williams will be one to watch close to goal for Saints," she said. "Both teams have great defence so everyone should come down and watch a close match."

In the men's competition, Corinthians has been the best team for the past decade but it was Wyverns which won the minor premiership and had last weekend off. Corinthians beat Harlequins 4-1 in the semi so will be match fit for the final.

Wyverns president Gary Millard admitted Corinthians would start favourites.

"I am hoping we can challenge them: Adam Byrne and Matt Hagenbach and the Ollerton brothers are four players we have to watch," he said. "We will be relying a lot on our young fellows, Matt Eastwell, Jake Reid, Josh Jensen and Simon Rolfe, as well as keeper Justin Alley."

A full day of hockey will start at 9am with the youngest players, Minkeys. Two junior grand finals will be played.

Wyverns men: Justin Alley (goalie), Ross Newton, Tom Mikkelsen (fullbacks), Matt Eastwell, Dion Phillips, Don Campbell (midfield), Gary Millard, Robert Eastwell, Simon Rolfe, Phil Rolfe, Jake Reid, Josh Jensen (forwards).
