Corruption watchdog to drop case against Michael Caltabiano

QUEENSLAND'S corruption watchdog will not lay criminal charges against the state's former transport chief because the prosecution has no "reasonable prospects of success".

Former Director-General Michael Caltabiano was sacked in February amid misconduct allegations after hiring former Arts Minister Ros Bates' son to a senior position in his department.

Mr Caltabiano told an estimates hearing he had no previous professional knowledge of Ben Gommers.

But allegations arose that he helped establish lobbying company Entrée Vous which had links to both Ms Bates and Mr Gommers.

The Crime and Misconduct Commission today decided it would not pursue criminal charges after seeking advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The CMC began a misconduct investigation in September, 2012, surrounding the appointment, after receiving information alleging official misconduct in relation to the process.

The CMC referred a brief of evidence to the DPP in July this year.

"Last week, the DPP advised the CMC that any prosecution of Mr Caltabiano for alleged criminal offences would not have reasonable prospects of success, and, in those circumstances, criminal charges against Mr Caltabiano were not warranted," a media release said.

"As such, the CMC will not take any further action in relation to Mr Caltabiano."

Mr Caltabiano, who Premier Campbell Newman hand-picked to run the Transport and Main Roads Department, received about $653,000 for working less than a year in the role.

Almost $235,000 of that was after he had been stood down on full pay pending an investigation.
