Council decision to sell their homes upsets pensioners
PIONEER Cottages residents nervously await their fate after receiving a letter from Southern Downs Regional Council informing them of council's intent to sell the property and no longer provide community housing.
Despite a meeting with council representatives and Mayor Peter Blundell to provide feedback and better understand what will happen to them, residents still feel in the dark about the situation.
66-year old resident Raymond Britton has lived in the Pioneer Cottages for seven years and said the meeting "wasn't helpful".
"I didn't learn much. All I know is that I have four months before they put us in the market," Mr Britton said.
Cr Blundell said the council was aware of the issues of the residents of the Fitzroy St pensioner units and the council is still considering how to proceed in the process of terminating the community housing provision.
"While I would not say everyone was happy at the conclusion of the meeting I do believe there is a better understanding of the situation and particularly the where to from here question," he said.
"Council has committed to keeping residents informed of progress in this matter."
However, three-year resident Raymond Kelly feels the situation is in the hands of the council as he has no other options available.
"We still know as much as we knew back then.
"I've asked them to keep us more informed, they said they would, but I haven't heard anything else from them," he said.
"I'm just waiting for something to happen."
Some residents will have to seek out people to fall back on, but chances are slim for them.
Most of the residents will be waiting for further action from the council, though Mr Britton will seek help from other local councils.
"I have asked the mayor if I can use the computers in the council office to write letters for other Housing Commissions. I'll write to Toowoomba council and other towns in south east Queensland," said Mr Britton.
