Local government runs in the Meiklejohn blood
SERVING councillor Neil Meiklejohn has declared he is committed to nominating as a councillor candidate at the March election.
Cr Meiklejohn is hoping for a chance to serve the region for a fifth consecutive term, after first being elected to the Warwick Shire Council in 2000.
Local government runs in the Meiklejohn blood.
Neil's father Les served as a councillor on the Warwick Shire Council, with more than 20 years in local government.
The Meiklejohn family settled in Karara, west of Warwick in the 1860s.
As a Warwick born-and-bred local, Cr Meiklejohn said he was motivated to continue serving the Southern Downs.
"I see it as a real privilege and I am humbled by the overwhelming support of people who have encouraged me to continue in my council role," he said.
The councillor candidate said the Southern Downs offered great diversity and a wealth of opportunity.
"We need to use our diversity to our advantage, capitalising on our local economic strengths of agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and education to grow our region for future generations," he said.
Jobs, growth and investment are among Cr Meiklejohn's key election platforms.
He believes the council should work with the community to actively seek and embrace opportunities to embrace investment that will offer jobs and regional growth.
"It is important that council supports a balance of economic growth in sync with liveability and protecting our beautiful natural environment across the Southern Downs," he said.
Outside of his official role, Cr Meiklejohn enjoys spending time with his wife Sharyn and children Jacob and Caitlyn.
On a community level, the councillor candidate is a parton of the Warwick Men's Shed, a regional scout leader, involved with the Southern Downs Relay for Life, a committee member of the Warwick Safe Haven and patron of the Warwick Swimming Club.
He also operated Eagle Boys Pizza for 10 years and served as president of the Warwick Chamber of Commerce.
