Southern Downs council silent on the social media front
EIGHTEEN months after agreeing to set up and utilise social media networks Facebook and Twitter the Southern Downs Regional Council is yet to make a post or tweet.
Both pages have been set up and carry a qualifying message.
"Thank you for visiting our Facebook page," it reads.
"Currently we cannot respond to posts placed on our page, we don't have the resources available to do so.
"We are using this Facebook page as a tool to 'push' information out to the community."
Despite the plan to "push" information out neither social media networks has been used since they were established.
On Twitter the council is not following one other organisation, let alone make a tweet.
On Facebook, it has managed to wrangle 72 likes despite no posts.
A Southern Downs Regional Council spokeswoman explained.
"Following a report to the corporate services committee in July 2011, the SDRC Twitter and Facebook pages were created with the intention of being used to broadcast information over additional mediums," she said.
"The intention is still to use them, once the resourcing issues have been sorted out."
CEO Andrew Roach said the resourcing issues would not be sorted out "in the foreseeable future".
"Council's budget process will review all priorities midway through 2013, and it may become a council objective through this process," he said.
"In the meantime, council has these mediums secured in case it becomes a priority for council in the future such as in an event of a disaster."
