Southern Downs councillor farewells beloved job

A LOVE of the job was not enough to keep Allora councillor Glyn Rees on Southern Downs Regional Council.

Cr Rees finished 12th in the polls behind four colleagues and said though disappointed, he would remember his achievements fondly.

"There's no way it's not a demanding job. I wish the new councillors all the best in what can be a draining and challenging job," he said. "I know people were critical of council but I did think we were making progress and the financial package that's been put together is effective and I just hope everybody continues to address the debt.

"There are a number of positives achieved by the whole council but the most memorable for me is Allora getting the Warwick water supply. It was something that had been a concern voiced to me from about 2004 and I think a lot of people now very happy with quality of water."

Despite being ousted, Cr Rees said he would not rule out running again in four years time.

"It's something I thoroughly enjoy doing and to represent people effectively you need to get out and about; lots of kilometres need to be covered," he said.

"The friends I've made and the community groups I've been involved in have been a real highlight of being on council."
