Councillor Pennisi fears park plan will be stalled
GOING through Southern Downs parks with a fine-tooth comb is proving to be a longer process than first thought.
It's been 13 months since the Southern Downs Regional Council began the park rationalisation process.
To date, no parks have been sold.
Cr Vic Pennisi, who has been pushing for the overhaul of council's portfolio of park land, said the process had "stalled".
"I have asked on several occasions why this process seems to have stalled and to date this information has not been volunteered," he said.
"A small amount of enthusiasm would see this process finalised and we can then refocus our energies somewhere else."
In December 2014, the park rationalisation committee was given two years to deliver a final report.
Cr Pennisi said it would take a solid commitment from every councillor to make that deadline.
"Sadly, the current staffing reductions will more than likely make it almost impossible to deliver on the timeline," he said.
"This will be an unfortunate reflection on those who have put in so much effort to progress this process to this stage."
Public consultation has been undertaken with a number of parks including Arcoola Park, Lysaght Park and Shilliday Park.
Recommendations have been put forward and actions, including leasing, ceasing maintenance and removing infrastructure, have begun.
Manager of Community Services Michael Bell said the council voted in September to delay further progress until consultation had been completed on the first 12 parks.
"Some staff absences due to personal circumstances have impacted upon the timeframes," he said.
"The timeframes will be determined by the completion of the community consultation processes and then the ensuing processes that relate to the sale, lease or alternative management of the identified sites."
Councillors were last briefed on the issue on December 7, according to Mr Bell.
Southern Downs Regional Council has a total of 160 parks, at least 100 of which will be retained.
