Council's reminder to pay up

SOUTHERN Downs ratepayers are being reminded to revisit their rates notices and pay their dues while the discount period is in place.

Council rates are due on Friday, September 23, by 5pm.

Last Friday, just 32.6% of rates had been received by council, yet CEO Rod Ferguson said this percentage was on par with previous years.

"It is quite normal for most people to pay their rates in the last days before the discount deadline," Mr Ferguson said.

"However we do remind people, particularly those paying by electronic means, to make sure their payment is made to council by 5pm Friday."

Mr Ferguson said only people who had paid rates and charges in full by that time would be eligible for the 10% discount.

Payment options are on the back of ratepayers' rates notices.

"If people are unable to make the full payment by the due date they should contact the rates team on 4661 0300 and make an arrangement to pay," Mr Ferguson said.

"Those people who make an arrangement and stick to it will not be charged interest on overdue rates but will lose the discount.

"Otherwise interest is charged at 11% (compounded and calculated daily) on amounts more than 90 days overdue from the date of issue."
