Country focus key to business success
Opening just a year after the end of World War II and with a few name changes and location shifts Choices Flooring Warwick has been the go-to store for floor coverings in Warwick for 73 years.
The slice of local history was put on the market a week ago and current owners Dan and Robyn Kuhn hope another local family will carry on the tradition.
The business began its life in Palmerin Street as Smith and Miller. Col Smith sold floor coverings and furniture then sold the business to the Monroe family and it evolved into Carpet Choice and moved to the corner of Wood and Albion streets.
Dan and Robyn Kuhn are the third family to own the business now Choices Flooring at its current premises at 61 Wood Street.
Both former schoolteachers the Kuhns have expanded the business with blinds and commercial installation as far as Injune. They have their own installers and have employed an apprentice to make sure the work is done properly.
“People in Warwick have that country focus. They’ll look after people better,” Dan said.
“A lot of people keep saying it’s quiet in town, but we’ve built the business up.”
Being a buyers cooperative and not a franchise means the owner has more control of their own business, Dan said.
Dan said they would be sorry to leave and would even be happy to stay on and assist a new owner.
The business is set for commercial expansion but to do that takes time and with six children the couple want to spend more time seeing their kids grow up, Dan said.
“I was born in Warwick and grew up in Toowoomba. The kids are settled in school. We love Warwick.”
The Kuhns are in no hurry to sell and are looking for the right person or family to take it on.
In its first week on the market there have already been three interested parties.
