Country’s top dogs Allora-bound

AUSTRALIA'S top kelpies and their handlers will converge on Allora this weekend for the 2013 National Kelpie Field Trial Championships.

Yangan's Gary Milgate is one of the championship organisers and describes them as a rare opportunity for Southern Downs locals to see the nation's finest dogs and their handlers in action.

"This really is a chance to see the best working kelpies in the country," Mr Milgate said.

Nine Queenslanders will contest the nationals including well-known Warwick trialler Jack Dwan, Nobby handler Taryn Bimstead and organiser as well as competitor Gary Milgate.

"For six of the Queenslanders this will be their first time competing at national level," Mr Milgate said.

More than 100 dogs have qualified to run in the event, which includes a field or paddock section as well as a demonstration of yard ability.

There will be a serious focus on handlers like multiple national championship winner Kevin Howell from Canowindra.

The event starts 7am Friday at Allora Showgrounds and runs through the weekend until the winners presentation at midday Sunday.

Admission is free and a full canteen will be operating.
