Couple celebrate 60yrs marriage
THE sparkle in their eyes and the spring in their step is all the proof you need to see that Ken and Marge Burley’s marriage has stood the test of time and love really does conquer all.
The couple is celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this Saturday, exactly 60 years to the day after they were married.
Mr Burley lived in Texas and Mrs Burley in Bonshaw, which is some 30kms apart and the couple would meet each week at country dances.
A couple of weeks before Mrs Burley turned 16 they started going steady, were engaged on Christmas day 1949 and married on April 10, 1950.
When asked how he proposed Mr Burley said, “That was 60 years ago, I can’t remember that.”
Mrs Burley said, “Back then there wasn’t really any grand proposals like there are today and I didn’t care, I was so madly in love with him, I just wanted to get married.”
After 60 years of married bliss the Burley’s are happily retired and enjoying living on their 100 acre property on the outskirts of Warwick.
Mrs Burley said, it was heaven on earth.
They have been blessed with five children, 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and believe that family is the most important part of life.
Mr and Mrs Burley said, “It hasn’t always been easy though, we have worked really hard for everything we have.”
While raising the children the Burley’s worked hard and even owned and operated a couple of small businesses.
They first owned a convenience store on the corner of Dragon and Fitzroy streets, which has long since been demolished and then went on to run the Shell Service Station which is still situated on Albion Street.
A lot of people might also recognise Mrs Burley from her years as tuckshop convenor at the Warwick High School.
Mr Burley said, “The secret to a long and happy marriage is to always work together and be honest and faithful.”
Mrs Burley added, “Give and take are also very important qualities in any relationship.”
Since the children have left home the couple have developed a number of interests together which they both consider to be successful ingredients to a good marriage.
The couple enjoy travelling all over Australia on regular fossicking trips and have quite a collection of precious stones.
“It’s something we can do together and both have a passion for,” said the Burleys.
The twosome also love fishing and make a point of getting away to the Western rivers at least once a month.
They are both also very keen golfers and play at least twice a week.
Mr Burley said, “I have been playing for 45 years and Marge only started playing to spend time with me.
“Now she has her name on the honour board more than I do,” he added with a loving chuckle.
The couple is quite proud of its golfing achievements, which include Mr Burley taking out the grey cup three times and Mrs Burley winning the district international bowl and the open championships.
The couple strongly agrees they have had a fantastic life and are looking forward to celebrating their 60 years together with family and friends at their anniversary party on Saturday night.
