Courier duo sets eyes on retiring
FROM women in see-through kaftans, to men who think wearing just a shirt in public is perfectly okay, Ros and Mike Keim have seen it all.
As couriers around Warwick and Killarney, the pair is no stranger to the odd, the funny and the darn right strange.
And in 19 years of business with Ros Keim's Couriers, they have not had one complaint.
"We have a lot of funny stories and things happen to us, but everyone has always been really nice," Ros said.
After their final delivery this Saturday morning, she and husband Mike will hang up the keys to their van and slip comfortably into retirement.
"It's a bit scary the thought of retiring, but also exciting," Ros said.
"It's the people that we will miss the most."
It all started in 1994 when Mike went for a job with the previous owners of the courier company, Security Express.
When he was offered a part-time role, and turned it down, Ros put her hand up to take the job.
"They wanted someone one day a week and I hadn't worked in 20 years, so I thought I'd give it a go," Ros said.
"Then they gave us the Killarney run and I did that for seven years and then they offered me the Warwick run too."
She upgraded her tiny Subaru Fiori for a Holden Barina, but before long she needed a station wagon to carry all the parcels.
From then, she decided a van was a more appropriate vehicle and has been driving one ever since.
"It's just grown and grown," Ros said.
Mike joined Ros in the courier game about eight years ago and said he had loved every minute of commuting back and forwards to Killarney.
"People always ask me 'don't you get sick of driving to Killarney twice a day?', and I say 'no way'," Mike said.
"I always see the farmers out harvesting or planting and it's great."
The Keims hope to move up to Hervey Bay later this year, and leave their alarm clock set to 5am behind.
Ros Keim's Couriers has been bought out by Darling Downs Express Transport.
