Court is ‘fed up’ with pub violence

MAGISTRATE Bevan Manthey says he's had enough of alcohol-fuelled violence among young Warwick men.

Mr Manthey said one local licensed premises had become "very well known" to him after only a few months in the area.

"I've had a gutful of young fellows and the pubs around here," Mr Manthey said during a sentence on Wednesday.

Harley Guy Beckhouse, 19, pleaded guilty to obstructing a police officer, being a nuisance in the vicinity of a licensed premises and contravening police direction.

Just before midnight outside a pub in Palmerin St last month, the Warwick man had a verbal argument with a security guard.

Police prosecutor Ken Wiggan said police were called to the scene when Beckhouse started screaming from the middle of the road.

"He was aggressive towards police saying 'you're all f***** pig *****'," he told the court.

"Police gave him a formal direction to move on and he didn't.

"He was handcuffed and had to be pushed to the ground."

Mr Manthey said Beckhouse clearly had serious issues with anger management.

"I'm just sick to death of alcohol and violence," he said.

"You're only a young fella and the penalties will continue to increase.

"You're now banned from the pub (for three months) - in other towns once you're banned from one, you're banned from all of them."

Beckhouse agreed with the magistrate saying he had anger issues.

"It would probably be good for me to be banned from everywhere," he said.

Mr Manthey said when he worked as a coroner he saw time and time again young people dying from one punch.

"A medical professional stood up in court saying it wasn't how hard the punch was, it was about the position," he said.

"Any punch can be fatal.

"And I certainly wouldn't want to take a punch from you; you're a big fellow."

Mr Manthey warned Beckhouse to think before acting.

"Whenever you go to put a drink to your mouth think to yourself 'is it worth it?'," he said.

Beckhouse was sentenced to 12 months probation and no conviction was recorded.
