Cousins vital cog for state side in 2014

POLOCROSSE: The Shepherd cousins, Cameron and Matthew, will combine in a Queensland team for the first time when the Barastoc Interstate competition is held at Morgan Park next April.

Cameron captained Australia in the 2011 World Cup in the United Kingdom and Matthew was part of the Queensland team in last year's Barastoc Interstate Series.

"I am looking forward to playing in the same state team as Matthew," Cameron said.

"I haven't thought a lot about combination but there is a strong chance we will be in the same section as we combine a bit at club level."

Last season, Cameron mainly played at number 1 (shooter) and Matthew at number 3 (defence).

"I nominated this year as it is a nationals year and good preparation for each horse and rider in the frame for selection for the nationals in July in Darwin," Cameron said.

"The Warwick club will play in a club carnival at Guyra the weekend before the interstate series. Ideally, a horse needs three carnivals to be match fit."

Cameron said he expected the nationals at Darwin to be the main selection for the 2015 World Cup team.

Matthew said being selected for the Barastoc gave him hope of being selected in a Queensland team for the nationals.

"It is a bit exciting to be playing in the same team as Cameron. Justin Hafey is the only team member I have played with for Queensland before," Matthew said.

"I have been selected on Drummer, my 11-year-old gelding.

"I will start training Drummer for the season in early to mid-February.

"I have to keep him sound and fit for next year as we are selected on a specific horse."

Queensland under-21 teams include Warwick pair Brayden Beck and captain Jessica Lawrence along with Cunningham members Zachary O'Leary and Carly Cooper.

Cunningham player Anthony O'Leary, the boys captain, and Sophie Forster and Warwick players Anthony Wells and Jordan McGrath have made junior state teams.

Southern Downs officials for the Barastoc include managers Trish Shepherd, Robyn Cooper, Heather Barr and Jess Osborne.

State reserves from Warwick and Cunningham clubs are Anita Shepherd (open women), Sarah Gilbert and Sally Strahley (U21) and Ash Wheeler (U30 mixed).
