Cowboys gear up for a wild ride on New Year's Eve
RODEO: Luke Henricksen will feel the adrenaline rush as soon as the Honky Tonk broncs run up at the start of the saddle bronc ride at the Steele's Bakery and Cafe New Year's Eve Rodeo at the Warwick Showgrounds.
Henricksen is originally from Wheatvale but now lives in Warwick and was introduced to saddle bronc riding when he was working for builder Mark Collins.
"We did some practice at Mark's property at Wheatvale. I have never been real serious but I enjoy saddle bronc riding and the adrenaline rush,” Henricksen said.
He won the saddle bronc at the New Year's Eve Rodeo in Warwick two years ago.
Henricksen mainly competes in Warwick and Killarney but did compete at Wagga Wagga and Hay at a time he was working on building sites in New South Wales with Collins and fellow saddle bronc rider Michael Maher.
"Mark, Michael, Peel Tribe and Darryl Joe Kong are the four who have helped me the most,” Henricksen said.
Dave Dwan had had wins in a maiden at Killarney and novice at Allora in his main sport campdrafting and the December 31 saddle bronc ride will be just for a bit of fun.
"Rodeo is a sport where everyone helps everyone,” Dwan said.
He has been riding saddle bronc horses for the past two years after winning in Warwick, Allora and Killarney as a junior in poddy and steer rides.
Dwan has recorded some saddle bronc placings and will be going for his first win on Sunday night.
Gates open at 10am Sunday, the rodeo will start at 2pm with the brumby catch and go to 9pm with many rough stock events at night. Fireworks at 9pm and midnight.
