Cowboys hooker to play with best in Queensland
RUGBY LEAGUE: Warwick Cowboys and Toowoomba Clydesdales' gifted hooker Ben Sullivan has recently added another string to his rugby league bow after gaining selection in the Central Division Crows representative team to contest the Queensland Rugby League A Grade and Women's State Carnival at the Gold Coast.
Sullivan has plied his trade on the rugby league field around the globe. The family name is synonymous with the game in the Warwick region.
The 27-year-old's solid performances in Toowoomba Clydesdales colours in the recent QRL Central Division 47th Battalion Carnival in Toowoomba caught the eye of selectors.
Representing your state is a dream for all young players, and while Ben was named in the Queensland Under 18 line-up back in 2008, he was denied after injuring a knee.
The 2018 State Carnival hosted at Southport Rugby League Club will provide an opportunity for the committed league devotee to to be part of a state level championship winning side and earn the cherished maroon colours with a Queensland Rangers side selected at Carnival's end.
Sullivan will be joined by a fellow local player, Wattles half-back Matt Duggan.
The tournament will run from June 2-4.
Sullivan is not thinking too far ahead though, because first there will be a much anticipated Warwick versus Wattles TRL clash on Saturday before he pulls on the Crows colours at Southport.
Cowboys top grade coach and former NRL mentor Phil Economides considers Sullivan a senior core player in his side who has good knowledge of the game.
"As a player he always gives 100 per cent effort, a tough-as-teak number nine that is always on the front foot and will not take a backward step,” he said.
Sullivan spent his junior years with the Collegians Dragons and his school footy years with both Warwick's St Mary's and Assumption College.
He commenced his senior career with the Warwick Cowboys, then moved to the Ipswich Jets and State League with Brisbane club Norths before heading to Rhode Island in the US and later Canada playing rugby league and rugby union in British Columbia.
