Cowboys keeping dreams alive
RUGBY LEAGUE: They may be the last Warwick team standing in the Toowoomba Rugby League finals, however the Cowboys 18s are going into their do-or-die encounter with the aptly-named Dalby Diehards without any pressure on their shoulders.
The Cowboys finished fourth in a tightly-contested top six in the 18s division, and have performed strongly against minor premiers Dalby in both regular season encounters.
Back in the third round, the Cowboys went down to the Diehards by just two points at Father Ranger Oval, after the visitors fought back from a 36-14 deficit to prevail 38-36.
A similar margin separated the two teams in round 14 as well, with Dalby coming out on top 22-20, after Warwick led 16-0.
The Cowboys have proven that they can test the benchmark team in the competition, and coach Matt Grew said they have the belief to get the job done tomorrow.
"In both of those games we were able to build a lead, but to Dalby's credit they were able to chip away and get us over the closing stages when we were tiring,” Grew said.
"The boys know that they can start well and build a lead against them, now it's just a case of maintaining that momentum for the 70 minutes and keeping the pressure on them.
"Dalby plays mistake-free football, and they've got some handy outside backs, so we know that we need to try and shut them down.
"Our defence has been good over the past two weeks of the finals.
"We'll be looking to keep pur defensive momentum heading into tomorrow's game.”
Warwick will be buoyed by their efforts in both knockout fixtures in the semi-finals to date.
After proving far too classy for South Burnett in the first week, the Cowboys showed that they can grind out a win, after a late Aden Howard try gave the side a 30-26 victory over Southern Suburbs last weekend.
