Cowboys miss out on chance for memorial game this year

RUGBY LEAGUE: The annual Warwick Cowboys games against Aspley, originally scheduled for Saturday, will not be played due to a lack of officials for the games in Brisbane.

Cowboys president David O'Leary said there was a workshop for administrators in Brisbane this weekend that meant no club games could be played.

"We couldn't reschedule as we already had trials booked for the two weekends before the start of fixtures,” he said.

"Both Warwick and Aspley are disappointed the games won't be played this year, especially as the A-grade game each year is for a shield in memory of past players, Brett McKenzie, Max Thorley and Nick Nolan.”

O'Leary said he was happy with numbers at training in each grade.

"We have plenty of under-18 players coming through and numbers are good in the three senior grades,” he said.

At this stage of the season, the second-division players are running with A and reserve grades but O'Leary expects second-division under coach Scott Fisher to train separately as the season nears.

Warwick will play Wattles at Clifton on March 3 in A, reserve and U18 grades and on March 10 the Cowboys will host Kyogle in the same three grades.

The Cowboys' second- division side will play the Stanthorpe Gremlins in the first game of the day on March 10 at 12.15pm.

Stanthorpe has joined second division following the demise of the Border Rugby League.

More players welcome at training on Tuesday nights for all grades, under-18s on Thursday nights and A and reserve grade on Friday nights.

Prospective players, sponsors or volunteers are welcome to call O'Leary on 0409754989.
